Having a video on your website is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a necessity

According to recent research, your website is 50 times more likely to appear on the first page of Google if you have video on your homepage.

What’s more, websites with video are more than 40% more likely to be clicked on than those that only have text.

Watching poor quality, DIY home videos on YouTube has become the norm amongst teenagers.

However over 75% of executives are now watching and sharing high-definition business videos online every week.

People are used to seeing television standard production on big screens. If you want to create an impression with your potential customers, you have to at least emulate the quality of TV to fully showcase your brand.

In short, the better the quality of your video, the better your product or service.

Figures just released suggest that publishing video on a website means 33% more users are likely to interact with the site, and are likely to stay on for almost twice as long than a site with still images.

Nearly 40% of Google users now see video in their results. SEO experts beleieve it is far easier to get a website with video to the top of the search rankings than one that contains just text. You Tube is now second to Google for searches, whilst Facebook is the third largest site for video consumption. Video should therefore be a major factor when considering marketing strategy for social media.

It’s been revealed that over 50% of film made before 1950 has been lost forever for a variety of reasons. The main reason is people simply not storing their films properly causing irretrievable damage.

Most cine film is capable of being transferred to digital format (eg DVD). However it’s essential to make sure the right equipment is used to avoid problems with exposure, picture-flicker, etc. Even if just using a basic projector and camera system the projector must have a variable speed control. Some cine films are clean enough for immediate transfer but the majority need to be cleaned first in order to ensure that no quality is lost in the process.

The advantage of transferring your old cine films to DVD is that you can then watch the footage over and over again without further degrading or otherwise damaging the film.

The best place to store old cine film is in a cold and dark place, but not too dry, preferably a place which will keep these conditions all year round. They should be stored away from pipes, heaters and radiators, sinks, windows, electrical appliances and concrete floors. Lofts, basements, garages, sheds, bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and conservatories are not suitable. Excessive temperatures, humidity and dirt can destroy films and sound recordings, as of course can fire, flood and contamination from insects and rodents.

In terms of storing you cine films, if you have sound film it’s essential to store them away from anything magnetic, and electrical equipment such as televisions and video recorders as the film can be damaged permanently. This is because the sound is recorded on to a magnetic audio film strip running down the entire length of the film. Nitrate based films must be stored with care as they are prone to spontaneous combustion if they are not ventilated properly.

Because of the risks involved storing old cine films safely, and the fact that treasured memories could be lost forever if not stored correctly, most people have now had their films transferred to other media.

There’ve been may recent posts about the increasing trends in the use of video for webites and mobile phone. but we feel the need to drive this one home because the growth of Website TV and video is happening so fast.

Not only are advertising budgets moving from TV to the internet, so are viewers. Research Markets predict that there will be 57 million households viewing TV and video online and that TV video content revenue will reach £12 billion by 2014.

What will make those numbers possible? It could be the fact that Apple TV and Google TV are already battling it out on the consumer product playground making a rich content experience for the user on the new web standard, HTML5.

A recent post on TechCrunch breaks it down nicely. Currently Apple TV doesn’t support flash, and Google TV doesn’t support Quicktime, and the cable companies aren’t supporting the fact that people want to stream network shows on their internet TV’s. However as soon as all this has been figured out, the rush will begin.

Just like it’s all about apps now, soon it will all be about internet video. If you don’t yet have video on your website you should talk to your local video production company before your competition does.

The biggest drawback to 3D is you need to wear those ridiculous glasses. Also to many people it can look very artificial – rather like a 2D photo given a 3D effect.

Apparently 10% of people can’t see the 3D effect at all. There’s an even larger group who can see the effect but either don’t like it or don’t think much of it.

Our brains already do a very good job of fooling us that a flat 2D image is in reality 3D, especially when all the usual cinematographic tricks of lighting and depth of field etc are used.

You can certainly see good 3D at an iMax cinema, but that’s a very different experience and far better technology than even the most expensive consumer TV screen can deliver.

It took over 20 years for Quad surround audio to take off. Maybe it will be another 20 years before a proper 3D screen technology is able to give us proper 3D without glasses that really gives the illusion of looking through a window. Sadly it certainly doesn’t deliver that at the moment.

There is a novelty value to 3D video in the home but that’s all.

As for trying to eat your dinner at home and watch a football match in 3D on the telly, do we really think so? And as for trying to get Grannie to sit down and watch the wedding video in 3D – unlikely.

When 3D TV works without glasses or headaches (which Samsung even warns of on its website and they are selling the kit!) it could become the next big thing but until then don’t hold your breath.

Recent research by the British Video Association (BVA) has revealed that more of us prefer a night in with our technology than a night out on the town with our mates.

The online survey of more than 2000 respondents showed that half of those asked have invested in home entertainment technology for their living room in the last 2 years, with 10% of these splashing their cash on Blu-ray players.

A whopping 73% of us now spend between one and six hours a day staying in to enjoy home entertainment. Also, more than one in four of us (26%) say enjoying home entertainment is one of the most important ways we now socialise with our loved ones.

Lavinia Carey, Director General of the British Video Association, said: “Improvements in home entertainment technology over the last few years have increased the appeal of that cinema experience in our own living rooms. With the World Cup earlier this year also giving HDTV a big boost, we expect to see more people than ever staying at home to enjoy HD, 3D and Blu-ray as a way to beat the winter blues.”

With the number of award-winning movies you can watch on Blu-ray Disc, it’s no surprise to hear that the format itself is to receive an Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced that it will honour Panasonic Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Sony Corporation, and TDK Corporation with an Emmy for their work on the format.

Development of Blu-ray Disc technology started way back in 1997, with the first prototypes from Panasonic, Philips and Sony being unveiled in 2000. The Blu-ray project was formally announced in 2002, and the Blu-ray Disc Association founded in 2004.
